UH begins real hoops season

Early indications are, it will be another wacky WAC season in men's basketball.

The University of Hawai'i will open its Western Athletic Conference season tomorrow against rival Fresno State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

"Not saying that all these other games didn't count, but we know it's more important to win games in the WAC," said UH senior guard Michael Kuebler, who leads all WAC players with 20.9 points per game.

Based on non-conference games, the current records of the WAC teams make the standings appear upside down.

Texas-El Paso, the league's last-place team the last two seasons, is 9-1; Boise State, which was eighth in the WAC last season, is 8-2.

Traditional powers Tulsa and Fresno State are both 4-5, and are the only WAC teams with losing records entering conference play.

"Probably every team feels like they have a chance to finish in the top three," Hawai'i head coach Riley Wallace said.

The Rainbow Warriors enter WAC action at 8-2 and on a six-game winning streak.

"I thought we'd be 9-1, actually," Wallace said. "But early in the year, this wasn't the same team we have now."

In particular, several players have emerged in recent weeks. Among them:

• Kuebler has become a more-than-adequate replacement for last season's leading scorer, Carl English. Kuebler has seven 20-point games, and is on pace to challenge the single-season UH record for 3-pointers.

• Julian Sensley, a 6-foot-9 sophomore forward, is UH's first legitimate triple-double threat in Wallace's 17 seasons as head coach.

• Phil Martin, a 6-8 senior forward, is averaging 16.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per game during the six-game winning streak.

• Logan Lee and Jason Carter — UH's "two-headed point guard" — are averaging a combined 7.1 assists per game.

• Haim Shimonovich, a 6-10 senior center, has five games with double-digit rebounds.

"We got some momentum going right now," Kuebler said. "We just need to make sure we keep it going."

• Hurting hero: Starting forward Julian Sensley sat out of practice yesterday because of a badly bruised left shoulder.

Sensley, who hit the game-winning 3-point shot in the 50-49 Rainbow Classic championship victory over Fairfield Tuesday, said he injured the shoulder while moving a television for his younger brother Wednesday.

"I missed the last step and fell on my side and the TV fell on me," he said.

He is considered probable for tomorrow's game. "I'm hoping to play, but we'll see how it is (today) and Saturday," he said.
