ADVERTISER CHRISTMAS FUND
Fund is at $133,784, thanks to generosity all around

Donations are still being accepted. Send checks payable to "The Advertiser Christmas Fund" to Helping Hands Hawai'i, P.O. Box 17780, Honolulu, HI 96817. Monetary donations also may be dropped off at any First Hawaiian Bank branch.

Goods can be donated at the Community Clearinghouse at 2100 N. Nimitz Highway, near Pu'uhale Road. For details, call 440-3804.

Islanders' willingness to share with those in need became evident again when monetary donations to The Honolulu Advertiser's 2003 Christmas Fund topped $100,000 for the fourth straight year.

The total as of Dec. 30 was $133,784. Contributions are still welcome.

The largest single donation of $28,089 came from a contributor who matched the first $25 of each donation received. This generous Santa, who wishes to remain anonymous, has matched the first $25 of each donation for the past 11 years.

All the money goes to Helping Hands Hawai'i, a nonprofit organization that helps more than 250,000 families and individuals annually through connected agencies and service programs. Helping Hands uses the money to assist those with emergency needs.

'Iliahi Elementary School in Wahiawa Heights displayed the heart that was evident in the 2003 campaign. The 480 pupils in kindergarten through fifth grade, along with 40 members of the faculty and staff, donated $1,307.41. Principal Jane Serikaku said the student council set up a lima kokua, or helping-hand fund, while faculty and staff donated cash instead of exchanging gifts.
