2 compete in chess tourney

Robert Lau, a homeschooler from Mililani, finished second in the 7th Grade National Chess Championship with five wins and two draws. Tristan Kaonohi, who attends Hawai'i Baptist Academy, playing in his first national tournament, tied for 14th place in the 3rd Grade National Championship with five wins and two losses.

The two members of the Mililani Chess Club were among more than 2,000 students competing in the U.S. Chess Federation's 2003 National K-12/Collegiate Chess Championships in Illinois.

Lau has not lost a game in his past three national scholastic championships. Kaonohi won the 2003 Hawaii Primary (K-3) Chess Championship.



Hale Kipa reaccredited

Hale Kipa Inc. has been reaccredited by the Council on Accreditation, said chief executive officer Plunky Pletan-Cross.

Founded in 1970, Hale Kipa is a nonprofit organization that provides shelter, outreach, therapeutic, residential and foster-care services for Hawai'i's youth who are at risk or in crisis. It is licensed by the Department of Human Services and serves more than 2,000 youth and their families each year.

COA accreditation attests that an organization meets national standards.



'Bigs' of Year announced

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu recently announced its 2003 "Bigs" of the Year at its annual volunteer recognition ceremony. These volunteers encourage Hawai'i's youth to be the best they can be by offering guidance, support and friendship. They are:

• Clinton Trocchio, 2003 Community-Based Big Brother of the Year. He is a search-and-rescue pilot for the U.S. Coast Guard.

• Jill Inouye, 2003 Community-Based Big Sister of the Year. She is assistant to the manager at Queen Emma Gardens.

• James and Yolanda Ter Hark, 2003 Community-Based Big Couple of the Year. He is a Navy petty officer and she is an executive at Hawaiiana Management Company Ltd.

• Ray Nakanishi, 2003 Site-Based Brother of the Year. He mentors at Pauoa Elementary School. He became a volunteer via a program that encourages AARP members to participate. He is a retired physical therapist and teacher.

• Dai Ngo, 2003 Site-Based Big Sister of the Year. A Sacred Hearts Academy student, Ngo is student coordinator for the Queen Lili'uokalani Elementary Site-Based Program.



Group picks president

Shera Tamanaha of Hawaiian Electric Co. is the 2003-04 president of the Honolulu Chapter of Executive Women International.

Other officers are Kay Sasaki, vice president/president-elect; Ada Iwasaki, secretary; Ka Noi Lam, treasurer; as well as Alyssa Murphy, Adele Tsukamoto, June Takekawa, Edee Doseo-Nakamura, Tracy Wong, Sherilyn Tamayose, Jerri Jessop and Nalani Paio.
