JADE ABELE

Hawai'i's poor preseason was forgotten yesterday in the rush of the Rainbow Wahine's 48-46 victory in their WAC basketball opener at Fresno State.

The Rainbows (3-7) trailed for just 17 seconds, before a crowd of 4,570 at the Save Mart Center. Jade Abele's driving layup with 2.3 seconds remaining proved to be the difference.

Abele, the WAC's leading scorer, hit two free throws to put Hawai'i ahead 46-42 with 2:11 remaining. 'Aiea graduate Aritta Lane tied it for Fresno with 56 seconds.

UH had two of its nine turnovers on the ensuing possessions, but Lane missed two free throws, then turned the ball over with 12 seconds left. Abele inbounded to April Atuaia, who gave it back. Abele drove the lane for the winning basket.

Jasmine Plummer's halfcourt shot bounced off the rim and was also ruled to come after the horn.

"We had two turnovers at the end by two freshmen," UH coach Vince Goo said. "That's going to happen. The thing is, they played well the last possession. The kids wanted it at the end."

Abele finished with a game-high 15 points and nine rebounds. In her first collegiate start, freshman point guard Janevia Taylor added six rebounds, four points, three assists and two steals. She will start again tomorrow at Nevada.

"Janevia is not afraid to go to the basket," Goo said. "She's more of a threat than the others. The only thing is, being a freshman she needs to know when to go and when not to. She's making better decisions now."

The Rainbow Wahine were out-rebounded 50 to 38 and shot just 32 percent. But they held FSU (6-5) to 29-percent shooting. Lane, the Bulldogs' leading scorer, had but six points. More significantly, FSU hit just 10 of 20 free throws to UH's 8 of 11.

Hawai'i led 9-0 after four minutes. Fresno closed to 11-9 as the 'Bows went seven minutes without scoring. The Bulldogs took their only lead at 18-17 on Chanie Sutherland's 3-pointer 2:15 before halftime. UH scored the final four points of the half.

OVER AND BACK: Tomorrow's game at Nevada and Thursday's at San Jose State will be broadcast live on 1420 AM, with pregame at 4:45 p.m. HST. ... The McCaffrey WAC Tournament will be March 8 to 13 at FSU's Save Mart Center. The Bulldogs are averaging 4,463 at their new arena this year, 3,000 more than last year at North Gym. ... In the first semester, all nine UH freshmen had grade point averages of 3.0 or better.
