The Hula Bowl Maui will add at least two more University of Hawai'i football players in addition to two who have accepted invitations, according to the president and owner of the college football all-star game.

UH wide receiver Jeremiah Cockheran and safety Hyrum Peters have said they will play in the game, according to Dick Schaller.

"We'll definitely add two more for sure," said Schaller, who said other UH seniors could be invited to replace players who are injured or have other commitments.

The Hula Bowl Maui will be played Jan. 17 at Maui's War Memorial Stadium. It is considered one of the country's most prestigious senior all-star games, and routinely invites several UH players and Mainland players with Hawai'i ties.

UH assistant coach Rich Miano said coaches are trying to get three more Warriors in the Hula Bowl. Last year, eight Warriors were invited.

"We're trying to promote (running back) John West, (defensive tackle) Lance Samuseva and (defensive end) Houston Ala," Miano said. "All three of those guys are good football players. It's just a matter of them getting more exposure before some scouts and someone taking a chance on them.

"I think John West is as good a running back we've ever had. When it comes to Samuseva and Ala, they're both great football players, (but) they're just undersized guys. They're tweeners and this might open up some eyes and maybe get them into a training camp."

Schaller said he would like to have the rosters set before the first day of practice on Jan 13.

UH defensive tackle Isa'ako "Isaac" Sopoaga and defensive end Travis LaBoy were invited, but will play in the Jan. 24 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., instead, Schaller said.

Gagliardi's winning tradition: Saint John's University (Minn.) head coach John Gagliardi will be one of the coaches on the 'Aina team. Gagliardi, 77, is the winningest coach in college football history (414-114-11). Saint John's competes in Division III.

Two quarterbacks pull out: Kansas State quarterback Ell Roberson and Texas Tech B.J. Symons will not play in the Hula Bowl, Schaller said. Roberson "decided he wasn't coming" and Symons is recovering from an injured shoulder, Schaller said.

Sapolu returns to Hawai'i: Jesse Sapolu, the first University of Hawai'i player to appear in the NFL Pro Bowl, will be the Hula Bowl's NFL guest and representative.

Sapolu will be involved in several Hula Bowl activities, including an autograph session, Schaller said. Among the activities being planned for the Hula Bowl are a concert with the group America, 5- and 10-kilometer runs and a golf tournament, Schaller said.

Millhouse in East-West Shrine Game: UH defensive back Kelvin Millhouse has been invited to the East-West Shrine Game on Jan. 10 at SBC Park (formerly Pac Bell) in San Francisco.
