Moanalua edges Kaimuki in OIA East basketball

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Kaimuki High School boys basketball coach Stephen Lee said his Bulldogs are "still about one week away" from coming together.

Which was good news for Moanalua last night, as visiting Kaimuki was only one basket away from sending their frantic O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division opener into overtime.

The Menehunes held off the Bulldogs, 59-56, but only after Sean Mullaney sank a free throw with 1.6 seconds remaining to give Moanalua a three-point lead. Kekoa Onaga's desperation three-quarter court attempt to tie it glanced off the rim, but it appeared to be released just after the buzzer anyway.

Kaimuki eliminated Moanalua from last year's OIA quarterfinals in a quadruple-overtime thriller.

"We had that monkey on our back since last year," said Menehunes senior Joe Nishimura, who scored a game-high 20 points last night. "It was scary again tonight."

Moanalua built a 57-50 lead with 1:39 left, but the Bulldogs cut it to 57-54 after a layup by Dexter Tautofi with 26 seconds remaining. Glenn Gascon's free throw made it 58-54 with 19 seconds left, but Tautofi scored on another layup with five ticks remaining and Mullaney was fouled on the ensuing inbounds pass.

Mullaney made the first free throw, but missed the second, allowing Onaga to grab the rebound.

"We got lucky tonight," Menehunes coach Byron Cheng said. "But we'll take it any way we can. We lost to Kaimuki three times last year and it always came down to the end. I felt glad to walk away tonight with a win."

Lee said personnel problems have plagued the Bulldogs throughout the preseason. Last night, forward Isaiah Ano, a key returnee, sat out pending approval on paperwork related to his academic situation.

"He has the grades, but we had to wait for a signature so we sat him out," Lee said. "He would have helped us tonight, especially on the boards. But we've had so much problems with getting the players together, I don't feel we're ready yet. Once we get all our players, the team just needs about a week to jell."

Tautofi and Nick Milan each scored 15 points to lead Kaimuki.
