SURFING

• Jones, Moody third: Hawai'i surfers Daniel Jones and Sean Moody tied for third place in the Billabong Junior World Championship yesterday.

The final day of competition was completed in 3- to 4-foot waves at North Narrabeen, Sydney, Australia.

Jones and Moody, who are both from O'ahu's North Shore, were eliminated in the semifinals. Jones lost to Australian Shaun Cansdell, 16.83 to 12.64, in the first semifinal; Moody lost to Brazil's Adriano De Souza, 10.5 to 9.83, in the second semifinal.

De Souza later defeated Cansdell to win the championship. The contest is considered the world championship for surfers age 21 and younger.

Jones defeated fellow Hawai'i surfer Kekoa Bacalso in the fourth round and Jihad Kohdr of Brazil in the quarterfinals. Moody stopped Japan's Hideyoshi Tanaka and Australia's Luke Munro.

Hawai'i's Joel Centeio, the meet's top seed, and Jamie O'Brien lost in the third round yesterday, while T.J. Barron lost in the fourth round.

The field consisted of 48 surfers from the seven Association of Surfing Professional global regions (North America, South America, Hawai'i, Europe, Japan, South Africa and host region Australasia).
