Jewels by Chanel

Advertiser Staff and News Services

In 1932, fashion designer Coco Chanel created her first line of fine jewelry, consisting of about 50 pieces. Her favorite gem? The diamond, naturellement. "I chose the diamond because it represents the greatest value in the smallest volume," she said.

Chanel boutiques in Honolulu are now presenting a private collection of magnificent jewels, inspired by a few of Coco's favorite things: comets, stars, pearls and camellias. The Collection Privée is made up of 35 pieces and about 3,500 carats, collectively.

Collection Privée can be viewed today through Jan. 11 during store hours. Most of the pieces will be at the Waikiki store, 2116 Kalakaua Ave.; a few will be at Ala Moana Center.

Indonesian wear

There was a sigh of sadness among those who appreciate the unusual in Indonesian textiles and crafts when, in 2002, artist Peter Raub closed Toko Kain, his little shop in Kilohana Square, and moved to Bali.

Now, for three days only, devotees of Toko Kain can enjoy Raub's latest collection — called Singmedaya, meaning an encounter with the unexpected.

Raub spent the past year working with Balinese artists and crafts people to create his own collection of textiles and silver. The collection includes batiks and hand-woven Indonesian cottons. His collection of bracelets, cuffs and earrings is a contemporary take on styles inspired by the hill tribes of Southeast Asia.

The Singmedaya Collection will be available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday at Silk Winds, 333 Queen Street, Suite D.

Information: 550-8111.

Anime you can't see

If you'd rather bob your head to Mazinger than Madonna, here's a bit of good news: Hawai'i's own "Anime in the Limelight" (which airs Saturday evenings on KUMU2 AM-1500) is now a part of the Toon Radio lineup.

The show, which offers music from anime movies and television shows via radio and the Internet, debuts on Toon Radio on Jan. 3. For a schedule, check www.toonradio.net/programs.asp.

The show is expanding to a full hour starting in February.

Bang your anime head!
