City to patch hole in Kailua Beach boat ramp

KAILUA — The city will repair a gaping hole in the pavement at Kailua Beach Park boat ramp, damaged when high-wave action pummeled the shoreline in November.

High waves last November have left a huge hole in the pavement of the boat ramp at Kailua Beach Park. Work on the ramp, near the Lanikai end of the park, is scheduled for this month. Despite the hazards from the hole, recreational boaters were still using the ramp.

Work is scheduled for this month, said city spokeswoman Carol Costa.

The ramp, near the Lanikai end of the park, had suffered from freak waves that sent water surging to the shore in Kailua Bay and swept away much of the sand between the ramp and Ka'elepulu Stream.

The high surf struck north- and east-facing O'ahu shores Nov. 21.

David Goebert, who uses the Kailua boat ramp, said the hole poses a hazard that can cause damage to trailers as people launch their boats, a feat already difficult because of the wave surge.

The high waves had also undermined the ramp where sand was pulled away from the edges, leaving a dangerous dropoff, Goebert said. Fishermen have placed a traffic cone at the spot, hoping to make boaters and swimmers aware of the problem, he said.
