Advertiser Staff

John McNamara, an associate commissioner of Conference USA, has been recommended to become the University of Hawai'i's associate athletic director for external relations, according to people familiar with the position.

UH athletic director Herman Frazier could have McNamara's name before the Board of Regents as soon as the Jan. 15 meeting.

For the past three years McNamara, 41, has overseen marketing, promotion, advertising, corporate development, licensing and merchandising for the 15-school conference headquartered in Chicago.

Frazier was athletic director at Alabama-Birmingham, a C-USA member, before coming to UH in 2002.

Previously McNamara was an associate commissioner with the Western Athletic Conference from 1995-1999 and assistant commissioner of the Mid-American Conference for four years.

He is a graduate of the University of Toledo where he was sports information director for three years.

McNamara's hiring would fill out Frazier's senior management team. McNamara would be UH's third associate AD, joining Marilyn Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano and Tom Sadler.

The position can pay as much as $108,500.
