Iolani's 3-point shooting sinks Saint Louis, 66-28

The Iolani School boys basketball team put on a 3-point shooting clinic last night at Saint Louis, raining nine treys on the Crusaders in a 66-28 rout at McCabe Gym.
Eugene Tanner The Honolulu Advertiser
The game was the Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener for both 2003 state finalists, although the two-time defending state champion Raiders looked to be in postseason form.
Iolani's Kyle Pape beats Saint Louis' Desmond Hanohano to this second-quarter rebound. Pape scored 10 points while Hanohano had a team-high seven points.
Iolani made 8 of 12 from beyond the arc in the first half, including a 28-foot swish by Ryan Hirata, in building a 43-17 lead after two periods. Hirata earlier drained a 24-foot shot and finished with a game-high 14 points.
"We all came in focused, since this was a rematch of the state championship," said Hirata, a 5-foot-8 senior. "We didn't shoot well in here the past couple years, so we knew if we didn't play well early, they could have taken control of the game."
Hirata sank another 3-pointer in the third period to make it 46-17, and Iolani led 59-20 after three periods.
Derrick Low added 12 points all in the first half for the Raiders. Low, Vinny Nip (11 points) and Kyle Pape each sank two 3-point shots for Iolani, which was 16 of 24 (67 percent) from the field overall in the first half.
The Raiders scored 12 first-half points on layups, including 10 fast-break points.
"We're a good shooting team, but the thing I was most proud of tonight was our defense," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said. "That's a credit to our kids buying into that philosophy, because we're not always going to shoot that well."
The Raiders (14-2 overall) actually struggled in the opening quarters of their past two games. They trailed Kalaheo at halftime on Dec. 29, and were down 8-0 against Kamehameha the next night.
"We kind of lost our motivation at the end of the preseason," Hirata said. "(Mugiishi) told us we need to come out with the same intensity at the beginning of the game as we have in the second half."
Saint Louis matched Iolani basket-for-basket in the game's opening moments, but Low's putback and 3-pointer started the Raiders on a 16-5 run to end the period.
Crusaders coach Delbert Tengan said he tried calling timeouts to stop the run, but to no avail.
"The biggest thing I told our guys was we didn't contest their shots," Tengan said. "We knew the scouting report, that Ryan Hirata will shoot it from that deep. But if we give a team like that open shots, it just becomes a game of H-O-R-S-E. We've got to challenge every shot."
