Kessell's no-hitter carries Kailua over Castle, 4-0

Advertiser Staff Writer
Kailua High School junior Courtney Kessell has thrown several no-hitters in her young but stellar career, but perhaps none was as impressive as yesterday's 13-strikeout, one-walk shutout of Windward rival Castle.
Kailua won on its home field, 4-0, to improve to 5-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Eastern Division.
Although there are some have-nots in the OIA, Castle winner of four of the past 11 East championships is not one of them. Yet Kessell was only one second-inning walk away from a perfect game in handing the Knights (3-1) their first defeat.
"I was surprised," said Kessell, a right-hander. "I don't really pay attention to that kind of stuff during the game, so I was surprised it was a no-hitter."
Less of Kessell's feats are becoming a surprise to softball followers, after she went 8-3 as a freshman with 76 strikeouts and followed it up by leading the Surfriders to a state championship last season and winning Advertiser State Player of the Year honors.
But yesterday's dominant performance showed she may have even more surprises to come.
"Courtney pitched a tremendous game, she had our girls all off-balance," Knights coach Jon Berinobis said. "She was setting them up with her riser, and then she'd come down with the drop. She caught us looking several times with that. She brought her game, like she always does."
So did the other Surfriders, a mix of key returnees and some new faces. Castle starter Lia Pedrina kept them at bay for the first three innings, but Tanisha Milca led off the fourth with a single up the middle.
Shyenne Hussey then got aboard on an error, and after one out, another error loaded the bases. Alisha Vegas then ripped a double into the left-center alley to score Milca and Hussey, and after a force play one out later, Keala Iaea roped a double down the left field line to score two more runs.
