You know the words, but mostly you know the voice. It'll be playing in your head in just a few moments:

I left my heart in San Francisco.
High on a hill, it calls to me.
To be where little cable cars
Climb halfway to the stars!
The morning fog may chill the air
I don't care!
My love waits there in San Francisco
Above the blue and windy sea
When I come home to you, San Francisco,
Your golden sun will shine for me!

The words were written by Douglass Cross and the music by George Cory, but the deep, smiling voice and phrasing belong only to Tony Bennett, 77, the 10-time Grammy winner who made "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" his signature song.

The interpreter of American standards, pop and jazz is heading this way for two shows next week — Wednesday in Honolulu and Jan. 16 on Maui.

Born Anthony Dominick Benedetto in Queens, New York City, he got his stage name from Bob Hope, who also gave Bennett his big break in 1949. More than 50 years, 50 million record sales, an Emmy, a Cable Ace Award and a multitude of other accolades later, the songmaster continues an enviable career that has attracted even the raised-on-rock MTV generation.

Bennett, described by the late, great Frank Sinatra as "the best singer in the business," has another creative outlet: He also is a dedicated painter whose work is exhibited in galleries around the world.
