Films from China to be screened at art academy

"Spring Festival" and "Rhapsody of Spring" are among the Chinese films to be screened at the Honolulu Academy of Arts' Doris Duke Theatre. The film series is being presented in collaboration with the New York Times' "Arts & Leisure Weekend Celebration of Chinese Cinema."
Three award-winning films from China will be screened at the Doris Duke Theatre of the Honolulu Academy of Arts, beginning tonight. The series is presented in collaboration with The New York Times' "Arts & Leisure Weekend Celebration of Chinese Cinema," with a couple of screenings offering two-for-one ticket prices. Regular admission is $5 general, $3 for museum members.

The lineup:

"Spring Festival" (1991, color, 100 minutes). Directed by Huang Jianzhong; in Mandarin with English subtitles.

A look at the lifestyles of different generations: In a small rural village in the north, parents await the arrival of their children and grandchildren in anticipation of the Chinese New Year celebration.

7:30 p.m. today, buy one ticket, get one free. Repeats at 1 and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at regular ticket prices.

"Rhapsody of Spring" (1998, color, 120 minutes). Directed by Teng Wenji; in Mandarin with English subtitles.

The career of a revered composer is explored, from his early and deep love of music, to his romantic love, and during the Cultural Revolution.

4 p.m. Sunday, buy one ticket, get one free. Repeats at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at regular ticket prices.

"Outcast" (1986, color, 110 minutes). Directed by Yao Shougang; in Mandarin with English subtitles.

A teenage girl volunteers to take care of a baby boy whose father is sent to the countryside during the Cultural Revolution. Her decision is misunderstood by all and causes her to be shunned.
