The Honolulu city government has earned more than $445,000 in rebates because of energy-saving initiatives over the past seven years, Hawaiian Electric Co. said.
The savings come from 110 projects that have reduced the city's energy use by 6,250 megawatt hours a year, enough to power 780 homes.
Steps include using LED lights instead of traditional incandescent lamps in traffic signals and using alternative energy sources at Ho-nolulu Hale.
"Our goal at the city is to reduce electrical demand in city facilities by 50 percent by the year 2010," said city Managing Director Ben Lee.
