Opunui's 9 3-pointers spark 105-59 BYUH win

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Shawn Opunui scored a game-high 31 points and set a single-game school record with nine 3-pointers in a 105-59 victory over visiting Western New Mexico in a Pacific West Conference game last night.

The defending PacWest champion Seasiders won their 11th consecutive game and improved to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Mustangs dropped to 3-9 and 0-2.

Opunui, a sophomore guard, finished 11 of 17 from the field and 9 of 12 from 3-point territory.

• Montana State-Billings 89, Hawai'i Pacific 86: Bill Day scored the go-ahead basket on a putback with 11 seconds remaining to spark the Yellowjackets past the host Sea Warriors in a PacWest game.

The Yellowjackets improved to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in the PacWest. HPU dropped to 4-9 and 1-1.

Day's putback gave the Yellowjackets an 87-86 lead.

After an HPU miss, Day was fouled and converted both free throws for an 89-86 lead with 1.5 seconds left.

HPU had one last chance to score, but could not get a shot off as time expired.

Aaron Abrams led HPU with 25 points and Marvin Noble added 21.

• Hawai'i-Hilo 56, Chaminade 52: Alex Cabagnot and Ryan Abrahams each scored 13 points as the Vulcans defeated the host Silverswords in a PacWest game.

The Vulcans (9-2, 1-0) outscored the Silverswords (2-8, 0-1) 12-4 in the paint and held a 16 to 7 advantage in points off turnovers.

Kashif Reyes scored 13 points, Sam Henning 12 and Bryon Sykes 11 for Chaminade.
