Waihe'e IV wins vice chairmanship
John Waihe'e IV has been elected vice chairman of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs board of trustees, replacing Donald Cataluna, who stepped down last month.
Trustee Haunani Apoliona remains as board chairwoman. Her term of office expires this year, along with those of Cataluna, Linda Dela Cruz and Colette Machado.
Waihe'e's term will expire in 2006, along with the terms of trustees Rowena Akana, Dante Carpenter, Boyd Mossman and Oswald Stender.
Ohana Day events honor all military
Military Ohana Day festivities at Kapi'olani Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today are intended to honor all branches of the military, state Rep. Marcus Oshiro said.
Free food and drink coupons will be available to those with military identification. Entertainment will include the All New Shanghai Circus, Jim Nabors, magician Greg Wilson and Imua.
About 4,800 Schofield soldiers will deploy beginning this month to an area around the northern Iraq city of Kirkuk. Another 3,500 will be sent to Afghanistan in March.
"While the Schofield soldiers are the focus of everyone's attention with the deployment of Army regular and reserve units ... , Military Ohana Day was never intended to be only for a single branch of the military," said Oshiro, D-39th (Wahiawa), who is one of the sponsors of the event.
Music program remembers King
University of Dayton concert saxophonist Willie Morris III will lead a special performance honoring Martin Luther King Jr. tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the Mystical Rose Oratory at Chaminade University of Honolulu.
The program is free and open to the public.
Chaminade University Chorus and Hawai'i Vocal Arts Ensemble will perform a program of gospel music, spirituals and music by African-American composers. Herb Martin of the University of Dayton and Allison Francis of Chaminade will present their poetry.
Reservations are recommended. The Chaminade special events line at 735-4816.
A special performance of music, dance and song by Chaminade's Samoan Club with Morris is scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday in the Henry Hall Courtyard.
Interior secretary to be at ceremony
U.S. Interior Secretary Gale Norton will join Gov. Linda Lingle tomorrow morning in honoring 10 National Park Service volunteers who each put in more than 3,000 hours at the USS Arizona Memorial.
The Take Pride in America Secretarial Award will be presented at 10 a.m. at the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center to seven survivors of the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor and three other individuals. The survivors are Hilma Chang, Ray Emory, Richard Fiske, Everett Hyland, Robert Kinzler, Warren Verhoff (who will be conferred the award posthumously) and Herb Weatherwax. The others are Gilbert Hatter, Stanley Igawa and John Newton.
