Jones made the right choice as time waned
Regarding the Jan. 5 letter by J.H. Williams: Mr. Williams, if you go back and review the tape of the Hawai'i Bowl game, you will see we could not have run the clock out as you stated there was too much time.
Next best thing for UH would be to make sure we have more points than Houston can score on the one possession it was going to have no matter what we did. That's what June Jones did gave us two chances to score.
How do you know that it was coaching that made the touchdown pass incomplete? How is it coaching that the field goal sailed left? Both would have automatically sealed the game.
Note to coach Jones: Don't worry, there are still some of us out here who don't suffer from short-term memory loss and know that 9-4 or better in four out of five seasons is better than 0-12, and it's all due to your coaching. Hindsight is always 20/20.

UH Warriors deserve better for bowl win
The UH Warriors football team had one of the best wins, if not the best win, in its Hawai'i Bowl victory.
Most of the letters and the press have tried to look at the negative, but I for one support the team and the fantastic job it did in the game. Let the coach and AD do their jobs without prejudgment.
Three overtimes! It is enough to keep your heart beating fast for several months, just at the thought of an overtime game, but triple OT? It makes me hopeful for next season. This is a great team of football players. They have been tried in the court of a few naysayers and the press looking for fault in their coaches.
How do the press and a few letter writers determine blame toward a happy, winning team, when Hawai'i as a state is known for its aloha and fair play?
June Jones earns every penny of his pay, in my opinion, with this stress, but is it worth it? Balance is needed, and cooler heads should prevail.
Coach Jones, the Warriors deserve better from fans and supporters. I hope I am in the majority wishing you, the staff, the AD and the Warrior football players a very happy new year.

Shooting shows need for trauma centers
I have a concern regarding the second man who died at Queen's from a gunshot wound incurred at the Pali Golf Course shooting. It takes over 20 minutes to a half hour to get to Queen's. Unfortunately, it is the only hospital equipped to handle such trauma. Why?
When seconds count, areas such as Leeward O'ahu and Windward O'ahu should each have hospitals equipped to handle such situations. Especially the Windward side, which is plagued with drug and crime areas such as Waimanalo and Kane'ohe/Kailua.
In situations like this one, I bet that had the victim been taken to Castle versus Queen's, he may very well have lived.

Letter about 'Ewa boar wasn't meant as slur
My recent letter regarding the 200-pound swimming boar of 'Ewa Beach was in no way intended to disrespect Joe Gaynor or Dan Devine.
These two gentlemen were featured on a local newscast and perhaps should have been awarded the boar. They risked their safety to protect youngsters and neighbors from an angry and frightened boar.
Unfortunately, some irresponsible neighbor claimed the boar and dumped the innards on the side of the road near a residence.

Three wonderful people came to my flat-tire aid
I would like to express my gratitude to Hank Adachi, George Kaeha and Phillip Kahoonei, who came to my aid on Christmas Day at Aloha Stadium when they noticed my predicament after a passerby informed me that I had a flat tire.
Without hesitation, Hank, who was parked next to me, proceeded to get the spare, jack and crank from my trunk. George and Phillip immediately got to work replacing the flat with the spare, which also needed to be inflated. George's wife, Ui, and her brother Phillip's fiancee came over to give moral support to their men folk.
Thanks to Hank, George and Phillip, we were able to enter the stadium to enjoy a most fantastic game without having to worry about the car.
The aloha spirit the Christmas spirit was certainly evident on that day. I was fortunate to be parked near these wonderful people.

We tipped off bad guys
I don't understand. Why cancel six flights?
If the idea is to catch or eliminate the bad guys, why tip them off? Why not let them show up and overwhelm them with superior force?
Now we have to wait until they come back again.
And they will come back.
