Iolani rolls past Kamehameha

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

For the second year in a row, the Kamehameha Schools boys basketball team succeeded in holding Iolani's Derrick Low to only four points.

But for 57th game in a row against a Hawai'i opponent, the Raiders prevailed anyway.

Senior guard Ryan Hirata scored a game-high 17 points, including four 3-pointers, and 6-foot-2 center Todd Blankenship added 12 points as visiting Iolani raced past the Warriors, 60-38, at Kekuhaupi'o Fieldhouse.

The two-time defending state champion Raiders improved to 2-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu with their second straight road victory against a 2003 state semifinalist. Iolani routed state runner-up Saint Louis, 66-28, on Tuesday.

Low, a three-time ILH Player of the Year, scored a layup in the first period to put Iolani up 11-8 and sank two free throws with 19 seconds remaining in the second quarter to give the Raiders a 28-20 lead.

And that was it for Low.

But Hirata started the game with three 3-pointers, including a 26-footer from beyond the top of the key, to put Iolani up 9-8 and the Raiders never trailed thereafter. Hirata finished with 10 points in the first half and Blankenship added eight points in the first two periods.

Kyle Pape then scored eight of his 10 points in the second half to help Iolani stretch its lead to 15 and then 20 points.

"If you take away Derrick, then we have four other guys who can shoot," Blankenship said. "And if you take away Ryan, we still have four other guys who can shoot."

The Raiders not only shot well, but played stellar defense for the second straight game. Kamehameha's 6-foot-5 center, Waika Spencer, scored at will in the first period on four field goals, including a dunk.

But Spencer was held scoreless the rest of the game as Iolani's perimeter defense caused turnovers in the backcourt and closed the passing lanes into him.

"If our defense keeps being aggressive, it'll be hard for the other team to get the ball into the places they want to get it," Raiders coach Mark Mugiishi said. "It also helped that we rotated four guys on Waika — Todd, James Street, Zach Tollefson and Sean Carney. And all four of them can play defense."

The Warriors closed to 24-20 midway through the second period, but Iolani finished the half with six straight points.

Kamehameha coach Jesse Nakanishi said he was proud of his team's effort, but acknowledged it will take more to beat the Raiders, whose last loss to a Hawai'i opponent was to Kalaheo on Dec. 7, 2001.

"We played well early, but it wasn't enough," Nakanishi said. "Against Iolani, you've got to play tough for all four quarters."
