Penalties for UHs discussed at meeting

Suspensions could be decided upon as soon as today for those involved in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl brawl on Christmas Day, University of Hawai'i officials announced yesterday.

Players from the University of Hawai'i and Houston engaged in a series of skirmishes that lasted for several minutes following the conclusion of the Warriors' 54-48 triple overtime victory. Both the game and the fights were shown on ESPN.

In the interim, there has been finger pointing over which school was responsible for starting the melee and who should be punished.

UH athletic director Herman Frazier said "there will be suspensions in order for both teams" after the commissioners of the two conferences, the Western Athletic Conference and Conference USA, meet today.

Karl Benson (WAC) and Britton Banowsky (C-USA) are in Nashville, Tenn., attending the NCAA Convention.

"They will meet (today) to finalize and hopefully come to an agreement on all the players involved in the incident," Frazier said in the release.

Frazier said "it looks like this will take until the middle of next week to complete."
