NORTH SHORE

Surfers pulled from high waves

Lifeguards using jet-powered watercraft pulled at least a dozen people from the water yesterday as waves in the 20-to-30 foot range drew crowds to the North Shore.

Capt. Bodo Van Der Leeden said the worst injury involved a man who suffered a lacerated neck. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

All North Shore beaches will remain closed to swimming today.

"It's way too dangerous for anyone but professionals to be out there," Van Der Leeden said.

At times the waves washed across the highway.

However HFD Capt. Emmit Kane said there were no calls about wave damage.

Van Der Leeden said after consulting buoy readings at about 5 p.m. that he expected the waves to drop off to the 12-to15-foot range today, "but who knows what we'll really see?"

LEEWARD

Speeding on group's agenda

Speeding on Farrington Highway along the Wai'anae Coast will be the topic of discussion at the January town meeting tomorrow, hosted by Rep. Maile Shimabukuro D-45th (Wai'anae, Makaha).

Shimabukuro has invited representatives from the Honolulu Police and Fire Departments to discuss speeding on the highway. She invites the public to share ideas on the problem.

The meeting will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wai'anae High School cafeteria.

O'ahu Fire stations to accept food aid

The organizers of a relief effort for the residents of storm-ravaged American Samoa and Western Samoa have arranged with the Honolulu Fire Department to accept donations of food at a dozen O'ahu fire stations.

Gus Hannemann, one of the organizers, said nonperishable food items and bottled water can be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the following fire stations: Hau'ula, Hawai'i Kai, Kailua, Kalihi Kai, Kane'ohe, Kapolei, Kuakini, Mililani Mauka, Moanalua, Wai'anae, Waikiki and Waipahu.

For information on drop-offs, call fire Capt. Anthony Sung at 831-7747.

Comic Bu La'ia held on Maui

Comedian Shawn Kau'iolani Hill, better known as Bu La'ia, has been arrested on Maui for alleged abuse of a household member.

Hill, 37, was arrested in Lahaina, police said.

Hill allegedly physically abused a household member on Thursday afternoon at the Kaiser Permanente Wailuku Clinic, but left the clinic before officers arrived.

Earlier Thursday, Hill had been in court for arraignment on assault and terroristic threatening charges. He is accused of trying to stop animal control officers from impounding his dogs at his Kula home on Nov. 18.

He was released on $15,000 bail pending a trial scheduled for March 29. However, Hill's bail was later revoked and he was taken into custody again Friday.
