Kalaheo rolls past Moanalua

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Iolani guard Derrick Low may be universally recognized as Hawai'i's best high school basketball player, but Kalaheo's Sam Wilhoite has made a strong case as the undisputed No. 2.

Wilhoite, a 6-foot-7 senior center, put on a spectacular all-around performance last night in leading the Mustangs to a convincing 59-41 victory over visiting Moanalua.

Wilhoite scored 32 points, grabbed nine rebounds, blocked six shots, dished out two assists and made one steal to help Kalaheo improve to 3-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Eastern Division.

Moanalua fell to 2-1.

Wilhoite's 3-pointer with 2:21 remaining in the half — his second of the game — capped an 11-0 run that stretched the Mustangs' lead from 18-14 to 29-14.

The Menehunes closed to 31-21 early in the third period, but Wilhoite scored on four straight post moves to key a 13-2 run that made the score 44-23.

"I was pumped to play back at home again, because we haven't played a game here for over a month," Wilhoite said. "We got to be in our own locker room, play in front of our own crowd, and especially for one of our toughest games in the East. We've been waiting for this."

Wilhoite has proven to be virtually unstoppable in the low post, scoring 22 points in a nonleague loss to Iolani two weeks ago and notching 22 points and 14 rebounds against Florida's No. 1-ranked team at the time, Dr. Phillips (Orlando), last month. But he hasn't always had enough scoring opportunities, as Kalaheo's guards often have struggled to make entry passes into him.

That wasn't a problem last night.

"I think we hit enough early (outside) shots to get (Moanalua) out of their zone," Mustangs coach Chico Furtado said. "Tonight our guards — David Moore, Matt Nakashima and Chris Tumaneng — made good passes in there."

Menehunes coach Byron Cheng said his players "were always one second too late" in applying outside pressure or providing weakside help in the post.

"I thought we hustled, but we weren't disciplined on defense executing the game plan," Cheng said. "We didn't get enough ball pressure on the guards, and when (the Mustangs) were flashing to the high post, our guys would follow and that would open up the inside. Then their guards did a good job getting Sam the ball."

Moanalua struggled just as miserably on offense, making just 1 of 22 attempts from beyond the arc. Slashing guard Joe Nishimura, who scored 20 points in a victory over Kaimuki last week, scored two points in the first period last night but none afterward.

"Joe injured his tailbone against Kalani (on Wednesday), and we didn't think he'd play tonight," Cheng said. "But that's no excuse. We couldn't hit the side of a barn."
