Chaminade has new building

Chaminade University's Natural Science and Math Department has a new home, thanks in part to a $600,000 grant from the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation. The 3,900-square-foot building provides 11 offices for full-time faculty, an 855-square-foot meeting room and a conference room.

The new building completes the first phase of a larger project to renovate Henry Hall science facilities. Chaminade's forensic-science enrollment has jumped from 20 students in 2001 to 90 students in 2003.

The Bank of Hawaii Charitable Foundation has given $5,000 to the American Cancer Society Cancer Support Programs. The grant is earmarked for the patient services programs that provide emotional support and physical comfort, programs that ease the financial burden of medical care and programs that open access to treatment where there are barriers.

The G.N. Wilcox Trust has presented the Kaua'i Unit of the American Cancer Society with a grant of $8,131 to purchase voice- and video-conferencing equipment that will allow volunteers on Kaua'i to proactively participate in statewide planning meetings, training and committee strategy sessions and more.

The equipment will allow volunteers to participate in meetings on O'ahu without leaving Kaua'i.

The 2003 Visitor Industry Charity Walk Island of Kaua'i has given $3,500 to the American Cancer Society to help residents of the Garden Island. The gift will enable the Kaua'i office to continue providing interisland air travel for cancer patients to get treatment, transportation to doctors' appointments, and peer support groups for cancer patients, all free of charge.

A&B supports Na Loio efforts

The Alexander & Baldwin Foundation has awarded $2,000 to Na Loio — Immigrant Rights and Public Interest Legal Center for general operating support. For more than 20 years, Na Loio has provided free legal assistance for indigent immigrants in immigration law proceedings. Thousands of battered women and children, asylum seekers, disabled naturalization applicants, trafficking victims and others have benefited from Na Loio's legal services program.

Youth project gets $1,000

The Hartwell and Rebecca Carter Fund has given the American Cancer Society a $1,000 grant to support expansion of the Generation Fit Youth Leadership Project in West Hawai'i. The program engages students ages 11 to 18 in health-oriented community service projects. Generation Fit students promote physical activity and healthier eating habits among friends, family and classmates.

Already in place at Konawaena Middle School, Generation Fit will be expanded to three additional West Hawai'i schools this year.

Outdoor Circle effort backed

The Outdoor Circle has received an $18,723 grant from the Kaulunani Urban Forestry Program of the Department of Land and Natural Resources to pay for a project called "Proper Tree Care on Hawai'i's School Campuses."

The Outdoor Circle will create a tree-care manual that will be distributed to every public and private school in Hawai'i. The Outdoor Circle will then hold seminars throughout the state to present the content of the manual to public and independent school administrators and custodians.

DOH helps Easter Seals

Grants totaling $39,900 from the Department of Health's Family Health Services Division and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division enabled Easter Seals Hawaii to provide training and support to families, childcare settings, and community preschools in East Hawai'i and on Kaua'i.

The program, called COACH (Creating Opportunities for All Children), promotes positive behaviors, creating positive home and classroom environments, kindergarten readiness and networking with community resources. The program focuses on children ages 3 to 5.

In addition, the Milton & Henrietta Kushkin Fund gave an unrestricted grant of $500 to Easter Seals Hawai'i.
