ILWU local elects president
Fred Galdones, former Hawai'i division director of the International Longshore & Warehouse Union, has been elected president of ILWU Local 142 and began his three-year term this month, the union's newsletter said.
The ILWU has 25,000 members. Galdones won with 55 percent of the votes over Ray Camacho, the union's O'ahu division director.
Galdones succeeded Eusebio "Bobo" Lapenia, Jr., who retired last year after serving for 30 years as a full-time union leader. Kapi'olani Community College is offering a Non-Profit Management Certificate Program, a continuing education series for professionals in the nonprofit sector.
The program consists of eight courses covering topics such management, governance and legal issues, fund-raising and marketing for nonprofits. Class size is limited to 25. Each course consists of 16 hours, to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The series runs from Feb. 6 to Sept. 11. Call 734-9256.
General Motors Corp. is recalling more than 800,000 cars because of a power-steering defect that may have led to at least eight injuries, the automaker said yesterday.
The models are the 1996 Buick Regal, 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, 1997-98 Oldsmobile Cutlass, Chevrolet Lumina, Monte Carlo, Malibu, and 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue cars. Also, some 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, and 1997-98 Buick Regal cars are being recalled.
GM faces a separate investigation into alleged failure of brakes, power steering and windshield wipers.
Microsoft Corp. will extend support for Windows 98, Windows 98 S.E. and Windows Millennium Edition through June 30, 2006, the company said yesterday, reversing a decision from last month.
Support for Windows 98 and Windows 98 S.E. had been scheduled to end Friday, and for Windows Me Dec. 31.
