Driver in Halawa crash arrested

The driver of a sports utility vehicle involved in a crash yesterday in Halawa that injured his three passengers was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of an intoxicant other than alcohol.

The 20-year-old Kailua man was booked for driving under the influence and two counts of failure to render aid at 6:45 a.m. and released at 6 p.m. yesterday.

Police said the driver was speeding on the Kahuapa'ani Street overpass near Ala Alii when he lost control of his 2000 GMC Jimmy. The truck struck a guardrail, slid across the roadway and hit another guardrail.

Police said a man, 23, seated in the front passenger's seat, was thrown from the vehicle and is in critical condition at The Queen's Medical Center. Two men seated in the back seat are hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police said none of the men was wearing seat belts.


Man arrested in hit-run case

A 53-year-old 'Aiea man arrested Monday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident on Jan. 2 was released yesterday pending further investigation for possible indictment at a later date. The man was released at 1:45 p.m.

A CrimeStoppers tip led to the man’s arrest and the recovery of a gold Mazda van that police believe struck and killed Julio Duque Jr.


Wailuku school vandalized

WAILUKU, Maui — Classes were canceled at Wailuku Elementary School this morning after vandals broke into the cafeteria last night and contaminated the school's food.

Vandals used a fire extinguisher to spray the whole cafeteria, including the refrigerator, prompting the cancellation of classes, school officials said.

Students were turned away from school this morning, and police were investigating the incident.
