By Wanda A. Adams

Island chefs keep getting the press: D.K. Kodama is featured in "Taste of the NFL Restaurant Guide 2004," in which recipes were gathered from chefs in 31 NFL cities. Honolulu isn't an NFL city, you say? Well, yes it is — on Pro Bowl weekend. D.K. contributed a recipe for fresh corn polenta with king crab legs and wild mushroom ragout. The $19.95 book benefits America's Second Harvest and other hunger-relief agencies. Buy it from www.tasteofthenfl.com or call (952) 835-7621. ... A bunch of local restaurants, as well as restaurateur Sam Choy, explain the plate lunch in a story in the January/February edition of Safeway Select (99 cents at Safeway stores). Among eateries included are Sugoi, Asia Manoa and Best Drive-In. Sugoi's Zack Lee shares his mom's mochiko chicken recipe.

3rd annual Keauhou Iron Chef event set

Folks in Kona will tell you that a homegrown Iron Chef competition is a good-fun thing no matter how many times you've seen TV's version. Keauhou Shopping Center's third annual Iron Chefs at Keauhou competition will be Jan. 24, part of the Keauhou Ho'olaule'a 2004. Culinary teams — no professional chefs allowed! — have 2 1/2 hours to shop for, prepare and cook up a beef appetizer. Judging takes place at 3:30 p.m., and the public gets to taste. The winning team will get a trophy and prizes, and $1,000 is donated in their name to the Big Island United Way.

They've even added a grilled 'ahi sandwich and a grilled chicken salad for variety. Through a partnership agreement, Kua 'Aina is now a chain, with 11 locations in Japan and a shop in Santa Monica, Calif., and another planned for Hollywood next summer — plus, of course, the 'Auahi street townside outlet. ...

Soon to move: James Gillespie, from The Plaza Club to executive chef at the Sunset Grill.
