Fire damages Ha'iku home

HA'IKU, Maui — Fire caused an estimated $65,000 damage to a two-bedroom cottage on West Kuiaha Road in Ha'iku yesterday morning.

The fire was reported at 8:18 a.m. and brought under control less than a half-hour later by county fire units from Makawao, Pa'ia and Kahului.

Kaua'i utility to help Samoa

PUHI, Kaua'i — Kaua'i's electric utility plans to send three linemen to Samoa to assist in restoring power after Cyclone Heta left half the island's electricity customers without power.

Kaua'i Island Utility Cooperative chairman Gregg Gardiner will fly to Samoa representing the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

Both the Kaua'i utility and the American Samoa Power Authority are members of the association.

"If a member of the co-op community needs assistance, another co-op lends a hand," said utility president Alton Miyamoto.

Search for girl comes up empty

PA'UWELA, Maui — A search yesterday again failed to turn up any trace of a 15-year-old Maui girl who may have fallen off a cliff at the Pa'uwela lighthouse over the weekend.

Friends who were with the girl said she went to get a cigarette at 11:30 p.m. Saturday and never returned. The grassy area around lighthouse, on Maui's rugged northeastern coastline, is a popular party spot.

The teen's name has not been released.

Department of Fire Control officials will decide this morning whether to continue the search.

Maui bicyclist injured in crash

PA'IA, Maui — A 54-year-old woman was in critical condition after losing control of her bicycle yesterday morning and colliding with a vehicle on Baldwin Avenue near Pa'ia.

The woman, who was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, was riding downhill at 9:54 a.m. when she hit a vehicle heading uphill about a half-mile north of Ike Drive, police said.

Motorcyclist identified

The medical examiner's office yesterday identified the soldier killed in a motorcycle crash Sunday in Royal Kunia as Chad W. Parker.

Parker, 26, who served with the 25th Infantry Division (Light), had been scheduled for deployment to Afghanistan, said Schofield Barracks spokeswoman Patricia Simoes.

Parker and another Army man, 19, were on a motorcycle that failed to make a curve on 'Anonui Street, slid across the roadway near Puia Street, went over the curb and crashed into a hollow-tile wall.

Parker was declared dead at the scene. The other man was at The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, police said.
