Mililani tops Leilehua in basketball in double OT

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

In a wildly fantastic game worthy of one of Hawai'i's most intense high school rivalries, Mililani's boys basketball team held off Leilehua, 65-61, last night in a double-overtime thriller.

The visiting Trojans, ranked No. 4 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 4-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Western Division. Leilehua, ranked No. 6, fell to 2-1.

Records, of course, usually are meaningless when the two Central O'ahu foes meet.

"We both could have been 0-9 and I think the game still would have been like this," said Mules coach Keith Spencer. "That's just the nature of the rivalry."

Last night's game provided the energetic crowd of about 500 with thrill-a-minute basketball from the opening tip. Neither team led by more than six points in the 40 minutes of play.

Mililani led 44-41 late in regulation, but Leilehua's Edward Garcia sent the game into overtime with a 24-foot swish while falling backward out of bounds with 13 seconds remaining.

Garcia had just caught an inbounds pass and threw up the shot in desperation.

"He was supposed to swing the ball around, but he was off-balance so he just put it up there," Spencer said. "It was a prayer that got answered, but hey, we'll take it."

The Mules took a 52-46 lead with 1:40 left in the first overtime, but the Trojans fought back with a putback by Andrew Tokumi, a free throw by Jon Santos and Puna Neumann's 3-pointer to tie it at 52-52 with 29 seconds remaining.

Each team had one more possession but failed to score, sending the game into a second OT.

Mililani built a 61-55 lead after Neumann's free throw with 44 seconds remaining, but Kennedy Orteza drained his second 3-pointer of the period to close Leilehua to 61-58 seven seconds later.

Tokumi pushed the lead to 63-58 with 29 seconds left, but Antonio Carter answered with a layup to make it 63-60.

Only after Aaron Kanno sank a free throw with 15 seconds remaining did the Trojans have some breathing room at 64-60. The Mules' Angel Fontanez made a free throw with 3.3 ticks left to make it 64-61, but Neumann got the rebound on his next attempt and sank a free throw with 1 second remaining for the final margin.

Neumann, who left the game briefly after injuring his right hip in the first overtime, led all scorers with 22 points.

"I landed on my hip and I didn't think I could come back," Neumann said. "But it kinda looked like the team was struggling, so I thought I could go back in and create some shots — either take them myself or set up others."

Neumann, the reigning OIA West Player of the Year in volleyball, hurt Leilehua several times with his feathery, high-arching jump shots. His 12-foot baseline jumper gave Mililani a 42-41 lead with 1:05 left in regulation, and he swished a 20-footer from the right wing to put the Trojans up 57-52 early in the second overtime.

"Puna is a really good rhythm shooter; he doesn't stay cold very long," Mililani coach Mike Coito said.
