An 18-year-old man died at Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center after being struck by a hit-and-run driver and run over by another vehicle last night on Farrington Highway in Makaha.

The medical examiner’s office today identified the victim as Joshua K. Diaz, 18, of Guard Street, Makaha.

Diaz is the second victim of a hit-and-run driver this year.

Diaz was struck by the van while walking on Farrington Highway near Lawai'a Street at 9:25 p.m. He was left lying on the roadway and was run over by a car.

The driver of the car reported the accident to police.

Diaz was pronounced dead at 10:09 p.m.

Police were looking for the registered owner of a Plymouth Voyager van who is related to Diaz. The van was found parked at Kea'au Beach Park.

Diaz’s was O'ahu’s fifth traffic death of the year. There were five traffic deaths by this time in 2003.

Lt. Bennett Martin, supervisor of Honolulu police vehicular homicide investigations, said there have not been many hit-and-run fatal cases on O'ahu in recent years. Until this year, the last fatal hit-and-run accident Bennett could recall occurred in 2002.

Police arrested a 53-year-old 'Aiea man Monday night on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide and failure to render aid in connection with the Jan. 2 death of 40-year-old Julio Duque Jr., the first hit-and-run fatality this year.
