Three Hawai'i boxers win U.S. openers

Three boxers from Hawai'i advanced while four were ousted in the first round of the U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships last night at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Richard Pelen Jr. (125 pounds) of Pearl City, Van Oscar Penovaroff (132) of Wai'anae and Christopher Downs (178) of Schofield Barracks all won their opening bouts to advance.

Pelen Jr. decisioned Wahid Rahim of Philadelphia, 10-9; Penovaroff decisioned Mahlon Kerwick of Colorado, 14-12, and Downs decisioned Marice Louishomme of Colorado, 15-14.

Losing their opening bouts were: Adam Rodrigues (119) of Pearl City, Jeffrey Pelen Jr. (141) of Wai'anae, Ryan Bolen (201) of Honolulu and Tinei Su'a (201-plus) of Honolulu.

How Hawai'i's boxers fared:

  • 119 pounds—Kevin Hudgins, Pensacola, Fla., dec. Adam Rodrigues, Pearl City, Hawai'i, 27-5.
  • 125—Richard Pelen, Jr., Wai'anae, Hawai'i, dec. Wahid Rahim, Philadelphia, 10-9.

SURFING

Levinbaum, Moore win big in Kona: Barry Levinbaum and Carissa Moore each won two divisions in last weekend's third event of the Hurley International NSSA 2003-2004 Hawaiian Tour in Kailua, Kona.

Levinbaum captured the Explorer Masters and Explorer Super Senior divisions, and Moore, an 11-year-old from Wai'alae-Kahala, claimed the Open Women's and Explorer Women's titles.
