Pimpbot in Wahiawa and Kailua

Ska-rockers Pimpbot take the stage this weekend at two O'ahu spots. Catch the infectious high-energy tunes of band members Tom Coleman, Mike Lewis, Fernando Pacheco, Rylan Yee and Chris LaPan at:

  • 9 p.m.-1 a.m. tonight at Kemo'o Farm, The Pub in Wahiawa. The No No Boys joins in on the fun. Cover is $5, for 21 and older. 621-1835.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

Monday marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the 40th anniversary of the signing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. In honor of these events there will be a bell-ringing ceremony, walk/run, parade and unity rally.
  • A candlelight and bell-ringing ceremony takes place at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Nagasaki Peace Bell on the Honolulu Hale Civic Center grounds. The Royal Hawaiian Band will play selections from Duke Ellington's Sacred Concert followed by performances by the Central Union Church's Youth On The Move choir, the Wesley United Methodist Church bell choir, and Jerry B. Wilson and The Ministry of Fire. 523-4674.
  • The African American Education Center Hawaii hosts the 2004 Freedom Walk/Run at 6:30 a.m. Monday around Kap'iolani Park. Entry fees are $25 for adults and $15 for children 12 and younger. All proceeds benefit the African American Cultural Center Hawaii. After the run, there will be entertainment at the bandstand. 597-1341.
  • The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition-Hawai'i sponsors a parade and unity rally Monday. The parade begins at 9 a.m. at Magic Island and travels along Kalakaua Avenue toward Kapi'olani Park. University of Hawai'i athletic director Herman Frazier is grand marshal. The parade will include bands, unions, political organizations, community organizations and beauty queens.
  • After the parade, there will be a unity rally at Kapi'olani Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., featuring food, crafts and kiddie games and rides. On the entertainment lineup: Azure McCall, Bobby Thursby's Night Train blues band, Bootsie, Chris Vandercook and company, Fred Walker, Franchize Rappers, J. Ghotti, Jerry Wilson and group, Kimberly Bradford, Kuumba West African Dance and Drums, Leilehua Step Club, SmokeTrain and Company, Shirley Syper's Keiki's Vocal Dance Expressions, Rubina Collier, City of Refuge Gospel Choir, Hickam Gospel Choir and Trinity Gospel Choir. Admission is free.


A pops tribute to the Beatles

Take a trip down Abbey Road with the Honolulu Symphony Pops in a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' debut in America. Tribute concerts will be held at the Blaisdell Concert Hall at 8 p.m. today and Saturday as part of the Hawaiian Airlines Pops series and in remembrance of the Beatles' 1964 appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Fund-raiser at Farrington

Help out the Farrington High School Athletic Department tonight at the benefit concert "No Ke Ano Ahiahi ... An Evening at Kaiwiula," 5-9:30 p.m. in the school's amphitheater. Entertainment is offered by by a host of performers, including Jerry Santos (above), Island Harmony, Na Waiho'olu o Ke Anuenue, Vaihi, Keawe Lopes with Lehuakea, Mahiehie, kumu hula O'Brian Eselu and Ke Kai o Kahiki, Kamehameha High School hula ensemble, Na Mamo o Pu'uanahulu, Ka Pa Hula o Ka Ua Noe o Wa'ahila, Halau 'o Naleiokamakani, Ka Punana Leo o Honolulu. Karen Keawehawai'i is emcee. There will also be craft and food booths galore and prize giveaways for a $1 donation.

Another generation steps up

See the light at "Ku Mai Ka Lama 'Opio" ("The Light of This Generation Shines Forth"), a concert presented by the Kamehameha Performing Arts department and featuring hula, song and chants with Halau Lokahi, Kailua High School, Kamehameha High School and Mid-Pacific Institute.

Showtimes are 2 and 6 p.m. Saturday and 6 p.m. Sunday in the Princess Ruth Ke'elikolani Auditorium on the Kamehameha Schools Kapalama Campus. Admission is $6. 842-8040.

The Hawaii Bridal Expo is throwing the bouquet and opening its doors this weekend at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. Brides-to-be should find a one-stop shop of wedding information, from photographers and decorations to caterers and gowns. Fashion shows will be held at 8 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Expo times are 6-10 p.m. today, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $8, or go to bridesclub.com for a coupon for $1 off the admission price. 591-2211.
