Leilehua topples unbeaten Mililani
By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer
Alexis San Nicolas and Pikake Nutter-Gaudet two Leilehua High School softball players who helped knock then-unbeaten Mililani out of the state quarterfinals two years ago proved to be nemeses again for the Trojans yesterday.
San Nicolas pitched a six-hitter and went 3 for 4 with three doubles, and fellow senior Nutter-Gaudet went 2 for 4 with a triple and home run to power the visiting Mules past previously unbeaten Mililani, 6-3.
Although yesterday's victory may not have had the same shock value as the one in 2002, it is almost as significant because it was the Trojans' first loss in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Western Division since the 1998-99 season.
It also creates a bottleneck on the road to the West title with Mililani (6-1), Pearl City (6-1), Leilehua (5-1) and Kapolei (5-1) each having one loss with two weeks remaining in the regular season.
The Trojans have won the past five West championships.
"It's different this year, anybody can take it," San Nicolas said. "This is long overdue."
The Mules proved yesterday they are as capable as anyone, banging out a surprising 12 hits against a Mililani team that had not allowed more than two runs in any of its previous games.
San Nicolas gave Leilehua a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double, and the Mules went up 3-1 in the second on two hits and an error. Leilehua made it 4-1 in the third on Chantel Tavares' run-scoring single, but the Trojans answered with two runs in the bottom half after two errors.
Mililani had a chance to tie it in the sixth, when Stacy Sakata led off with a single. A pinch-runner then advanced to second on Samantha Bolosan's sacrifice bunt and to third on a throwing error, but was thrown out in a rundown between third and home.
Nutter-Gaudet then led off the seventh with a monster home run over the left-field fence. San Nicolas followed with a double and later scored on a groundout.
Two years ago, Nutter-Gaudet's two-run home run and San Nicolas' three-hitter lifted the Mules to a 2-0 upset of the No. 2-seeded Trojans in the state quarterfinals.
"Mililani is still really good, but we knew we wanted to play them again," San Nicolas said.
Nutter-Gaudet, who also competes against the arch rival Trojans in volleyball and basketball, agreed.
"Every time we play Mililani, we're always pumped," she said. "We just have to stay consistent and play every game like how we played today." Alexis San Nicolas and Pikake Nutter-Gaudet; Dana Lee, Tierra Cuba (3), Lee (4) and Stacy Sakata. WSan Nicholas; LLee.
