BYUH rallies past Chaminade in PacWest basketball

Beau Nobman scored 20 points and Michael Stowell and Jake Chrisman each had 15 as Brigham Young-Hawai'i rallied for a 70-66 Pacific West Conference basketball victory over Chaminade at McCabe Gym last night.

BYUH is 14-2 overall and 4-0 in the PacWest. Chaminade is 2-10 and 0-3.

Chaminade led 24-22 at halftime.

Nobman was 6 for 6 from the field, including three 3-pointers. Austin Smylie had nine rebounds for BYUH.

Kashif Reyes led Chaminade with 18 points. Nick Frey had a game-high 10 rebounds.

• UH wins: Justin Griffin's 21 points led four Hawai'i-Hilo players in double-figures as the Vulcans defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 88-73, in a Pacific West game.

An crowd of 2,241 watched the game at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo last night.

Joe Travis scored 17, Alex Cabagnot 15 and Ryan Hogue 10 for the Vulcans (11-2 overall, 3-0 PacWest). HPU is 5-10 and 2-2.

Marvin Noble scored a game-high 24 points for the Sea Warriors.



BASEBALL

UH picked fourth: The University of Hawai'i has been picked to finish fourth in the six-team Western Athletic Conference in a poll of conference coaches, as well as by Baseball America magazine.

The conference announced its poll yesterday. The coaches picked defending national and WAC champion Rice to repeat as conference champions. Rice received all five first-place votes (coaches cannot vote for their own teams) for 25 points. Fresno State, which had the only other first-place vote, had 19 points, followed by Nevada (18 points), UH (13), San Jose State (10) and Louisiana Tech (5).

Baseball America also picked the Rainbows to finish fourth in its preview of conferences in the Western U.S. Its order of finish is the same at the coaches' poll.

The WAC preview was posted on Baseball America Online, the publication's Web site.

Senior relief pitcher Clary Carlsen was the only Rainbow selected to the preseason All-WAC team.

Baseball America picked junior college transfer outfielder Robbie Wilder on its preseason all-conference team. Wilder and another JC transfer, left-handed pitcher Mark Rodrigues, a graduate of Kaua'i High, were listed as among the top 10 prospects for this year's draft. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Keahi Rawlins was listed in the top prospects for the 2005 draft.

UH freshman right-handed pitcher Steven Wright was listed as one of the top five newcomers in the WAC by Baseball America.

Baseball America also listed players with the best tools in the conference. Andrew Sansaver and Isaac Omura were named as the conference's best defensive first baseman and second baseman, respectively.

The Rainbows open the season Jan. 30 against fifth-ranked Texas, the 2002 College World Series champions.



BOXING

Penovaroff advances: Wai'anae's Van Oscar Penovaroff advanced to the semifinals while two other Hawai'i boxers lost in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships yesterday at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Penovaroff decisioned Troy Harden of Melbourne, Fla., 24-8, in a 132-pound bout. He will face David Rodela, of Oxnard, Calif., in today's semifinals.

In the 125-pound division, Matt Remillard, of Manchester, Conn., stopped Richard Pelen Jr., of Wai'anae, in the third round.

In the 178-pound division, Marcus Johnson, of Killeen, Texas, decisioned Christopher Downs, of Schofield Barracks, 16-4.

The top two finishers in each weight class who have not already qualified for Olympic Team Trials will earn spots at trials in Tunica, Miss., Feb. 16 to 21.

Wai'anae's Samson Guillermo, No. 2 in the USA Boxing 119-pound rankings, already has earned a spot in the trials.
