Tonight's Must-See

"Star Search" return, 7 p.m., CBS. After a quick flash and fade last season, this show gets another chance. This time, it will have nine Saturdays, leading up to the finals. Arsenio Hall still hosts, but now the comedy category is gone. The competition is only for singers, junior singers and dancers. Viewers and judges will pick the winners, with a twist following: In each category, three previous champs will be in a "winners' circle." This week's winner then calls out one of them for a face-off; the winner of that will be in the circle the next week. The three survivors in each circle will compete for that category's $100,000 prize.

"As Good as It Gets" (1997), 7 p.m., NBC. If you're looking for smart, sophisticated drama-comedy, this film is just about as good as it gets. James L. Brooks ("Terms of Endearment") co-wrote and directed it, getting Oscar-winning work from Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson.

Of Note

"Astro Boy" debut, 8:30 a.m., WB. A half-century ago, this became a popular Japanese comic book by Osamu Tezuka. Now it's been turned into a cartoon series with big stakes and big ambitions. We have a new superhero with 100,000-horsepower strength, rocket feet and a joyous soul. The opener is quite spectacular.

"The District," 9 p.m., CBS. Mannion probes a troubling question: When a gay cop was injured, did his partner fail to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation?

"Monk," 9 p.m., ABC. After its own dreadful "L.A. Dragnet" failed, ABC bought reruns of this fine show that airs on the USA Network. There's a serious murder mystery here, but there are funny moments when the obsessive Monk has to be a substitute teacher.

"Saturday Night Live," 10:30 p.m., NBC. Newlyweds Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey host; G-Unit (with 50 Cent) is the musical guest.
