Mililani stays unbeaten in boys West soccer, 3-0

At first it was a matter of "if." Then "when." Finally, it was "by how much."
The Mililani boys defeated Kapolei, 3-0, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division boys soccer match at Mililani High School last night in a game that featured two of the top three teams in the OIA West.
"Last year they were competitive, so we knew what we were in for," Mililani senior midfielder Justin Kim said. "We knew it was going to be tough. They work the hardest in the OIA."
The Trojans improved to 8-0-0, and retained sole possession of first place. The Hurricanes dropped to 6-2-0 and into third place, behind Pearl City (6-1-0), which had a bye yesterday.
Mililani is first in the OIA West in goals scored (39) and goals allowed (3), and Kapolei is third in goals scored (17) and tied for second in goals allowed (5).
Mililani opened the game with a lot of pressure and a strong possession game, forcing Kapolei to play in its half of the field. The Trojans methodically developed their offense, stringing five or six passes to utilize the entire field and set up numerous opportunities.
The Trojans broke through in the 33rd minute when senior forward Patrick Egloria collected a 25-yard through pass from senior defender Jay Abrigo on the left flank, beat one defender and finished the play with a 5-yard shot into the left side of the net.
"It was a nice pass," Egloria said. "I always make those runs across the middle and they always pass it to me. I knew once I got the ball I would be one-on-one with the sweeper."
One minute later, Kim scored on a direct kick from just outside the 18-yard box on the left side.
"Our game plan coming in was to control the game and win, and to take their heart away," Kim said. "That's what we did when we scored two early goals. It gave us a lift. It was important to bring their self-confidence down."
Mililani struck again in the second half when Abrigo nailed a 30-yard shot just under the crossbar in the 52nd minute off an assist from junior midfielder Justin Ching.
After being down, Kapolei was forced to retreat into its defensive third of the field; staying alive only by clearing the ball out and therefore failing to develop much of an offensive attack. Most of its chances came on counterattacks off long clears by the defense.
"That's Mililani for you," Kapolei coach Bryce Kaneshiro said. "They're going to put a lot of pressure on you and force you to kick it out. Our counterattack didn't work too good today. We haven't had a team bring pressure like that for a while."
Mililani co-head coach Jeff Yamamoto pointed to the loss of Kapolei's key player, senior midfielder Rhys Kita, as a factor in the Trojans' victory.
"He got injured and that messed up the flow of play for them," Yamamoto said, also adding that Kita wasn't in the game when the Trojans scored their first two goals.
Mililani, the three-time defending state champion, has not lost a regular or post-season game since the 2000-01 season.
