HPU student wins award

Vanessa Katz, who led the Hawai'i Pacific University team in the 2003 National Student Advertising Competition, has been named a Most Promising Minority Student for 2004 by the American Advertising Federation. She was one of 25 students honored nationwide.

Katz, a graduate of Leilehua High School, is a senior advertising major in the College of Communication at HPU. She has a 4.0 GPA and is a President's Scholar recipient. She is president of Akamai Advertising Agency, the HPU student chapter of the American Advertising Foundation, and serves as a student liaison to the board of directors for AD2 Honolulu, the professional chapter of the AAF.



Service group nominations in

U.S. Sen. Dan K. Inouye has announced his nominations to the U.S. service academies for the class entering July 2004. Principal nominees are:

• U.S. Air Force Academy: Kekoa Kuamoo-Peck and Damon Jones.

• U.S. Military Academy: Marissa Kobayashi and Peter Beamer.

• U.S. Naval Academy: Blair Suzuki.

• U.S. Merchant Marine Academy: William Cannell, Erik Clemson, Eduardo Duquez and Brian Fields.



Liquor panel re-elects leader

John Spierling was re-elected chairman of the Honolulu Liquor Commission for 2004. Spierling appointed Clyde Eugenio and Dennis Enomoto vice chairmen.

Other commission members are Chu Lan Shubert-Kwock and Danny Kim. Wallace Weatherwax is the commission's administrator.



125 helped by Ko Olina fund

The Ko Olina Training Fund has awarded more than $310,000 in scholarships to 125 residents, more than doubling the resort's first award disbursement in September. The training fund presented scholarships of up to $2,500 to recipients for their selected educational and training programs.

As the initial step to improving opportunities for the region, the Ko Olina Resort & Marina created the Training Fund and made an initial $500,000 donation in June 2003.



Center names 2004 officers

Dee Dee Letts, special projects coordinator of the 1st Circuit Court, is the 2004 president of the Mediation Center of the Pacific.

Other officers are vice president Ruth Tschumy, treasurer Robert Lee Driscoll and secretary Bruce McEwan.
