Kaimuki hands Kalaheo first basketball loss, 55-48

Kaimuki, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's most enigmatic boys basketball team, provided yet another surprise last night by knocking off previously unbeaten Kalaheo, 55-48.

The visiting Mustangs (5-1) are ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, but they could not overcome the unranked Bulldogs, who improved to 4-2 with their fourth straight victory.

"It's just about everyone playing to their potential," said Kaimuki forward Nick Milan, who scored a team-high 20 points. "We just had to get everyone involved."

The Bulldogs also got 17 points from senior guard Jimmy Miyasaka and nine crucial points from point guard Kekoa Onaga, who slashed his way to three third-period baskets to help Kaimuki take a 42-39 lead into the final quarter after it was tied 23-23 at the half.

Kalaheo took a brief 43-42 lead early in the fourth, but Milan answered with a fast break layup and the Bulldogs never trailed thereafter.

Mustangs center Sam Wilhoite, who scored a game-high 26 points, hit a layup with 1:12 remaining to close Kalaheo to 52-48, but Isaiah Ano sank a free throw with 18 seconds left to make it 53-48 and Miyasaka sealed it with two free throws with three seconds left.

The Bulldogs started the season with a 59-56 loss at Moanalua and a shocking 41-40 defeat at Kailua.

"Every team we've played seems to hit big shots at the end, so I was crossing my fingers this time," Kaimuki coach Stephen Lee said. "But tonight our guys really stepped up and played well at the end, and I'm proud of them."

Mustangs coach Chico Furtado said defensive breakdowns and lack of offensive support for Wilhoite proved costly for his team.

"Our defense wasn't very good, we let them get way too many interior shots," Furtado said. "I knew we were undersized, but that's no excuse — we've got to scrap and take some charges. Milan hurt us, and Onaga was able to get to the bucket. And we're gonna need some perimeter help for Sam. We allowed them to sit in that zone (defense) and didn't hit enough 3s to loosen it up."

But Furtado, for one, was not fooled by the Bulldogs' seemingly innocent 3-2 record coming in.

"Even with their two losses, I knew they were a team to be reckoned with," Furtado said. "Playing here is tough, and they're a good team."
