Two charged in Black Point robbery

Two men were charged yesterday in the robbery at a Black Point home this week.

James Kiyabu, 27, of Waikiki, was charged with first-degree robbery and second-degree burglary. He is being held on $100,000 bail.

Conrad G.K. Silva, 28, of Waipahu, was charged with first-degree burglary. He is being held on $50,000 bail.

Two men were found by the homeowner inside his Paou Street home at 11:15 a.m. Monday, according to court documents. One of the men aimed a handgun at the homeowner and threatened to shoot him.

Man dies after accident on H-3

A 63-year-old man died after his truck struck another vehicle in the H-3 Freeway tunnel yesterday.

The medical examiner identified the victim as James R. Sabatini of Wai'anae.

Police said the man may have suffered heart problems just before the collision. An autopsy was scheduled.

The man was driving eastbound when his Ford flatbed truck swerved into a Ford pickup at about 12:07 p.m. The flatbed struck the right curb in the tunnel and came to a rest, police said.

Witnesses pulled the driver out of his vehicle and began administering CPR. He was taken to The Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition but died at 1:12 p.m. The pickup truck driver, a La'ie man, was not seriously injured, police said.

Cleaner product scam hits Kona

KEALAKEHE, Hawai'i — Big Island police are warning Kona residents and small businesses about a scam involving the sale of a cleaning product.

Over the past week, a man claiming to be a salesman has been visiting small businesses in Kona and taking orders for a cleaning liquid, police said. Buyers are told to write out a check to a third person the salesman says is his boss.

Two businesses gave the man checks but he never returned with the product. The businesses were able to stop payment on the checks before they could be cashed, police said.

Two arrested in Hilo drug raid

HILO, Hawai'i — Hilo Ice Task Force officers arrested two people during a drug raid at an A'api Place residence in Hilo Wednesday evening.

A 25-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were arrested on drug charges. Officers recovered 5.1 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 2.4 grams of marijuana and illegal drug paraphernalia.

The woman was released, but the man was being held in the Hilo cellblock on four bench warrants for unrelated cases.

Last week, the task force and police vice officers conducted searches at five Hilo locations, arresting eight drug suspects.
