Toilet-paper issue leads to jail term

A former state deputy sheriff has been sentenced to 10 days in jail and a year's probation for assaulting a prisoner in the Honolulu District Court cellblock in April 2002.

Circuit Judge Steven Alm on Tuesday denied a request by Wyman Chang to defer accepting his guilty plea, which would have allowed Chang to avoid having a criminal record if he conforms to the conditions of his probation.

An investigation by the Department of the Attorney General found that an inmate in a District Court holding cell banged on the cell door and demanded toilet paper. When told there was no toilet paper, the inmate suggested that he use the deputy's socks, according to a statement form the attorney general's office.

A verbal confrontation escalated and resulted in Chang "repeatedly kicking and punching the inmate," according to the statement. Chang pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor assault.

Arrest made in Kahala robbery

Police arrested a 27-year-old Waikiki man for questioning Tuesday in connection with Monday's armed robbery at a Black Point residence.

The man was identified through fingerprints found at a Papu Circle house where a 49-year-old homeowner confronted two burglars in his living room. One of the intruders threatened the homeowner with a gun before the pair fled in a silver Dodge Intrepid.

Police stopped the car on 12th Avenue at 11:50 a.m., about 35 minutes after the robbery was reported.

One of the two men in the car fled. He was found Tuesday on Paoakalani Avenue at 5:25 p.m. According to Hawai'i Criminal Justice Data Center records, he has been convicted for three misdemeanors and one petty misdemeanor since 2001.

A Waipahu man, 28, arrested Monday, was still at the main police station cellblock yesterday, pending charges.
