The University of Hawai'i Foundation has received a $100,000 gift from local business and community leaders Roy and Hilda Takeyama to establish a fund to provide direct support for students in the University of Hawai'i's new Academy for Creative Media.

The fund will help the inter-campus initiative develop a world class creative media program focusing on Hawai'i, Asia and Pacific themes.

Takeyama, a former UH regent who served from 1991 to 1995, said he is impressed with academy chairman Chris Lee's "creativity, dedication and public service.

"Hopefully small business people like me will step up to the plate and support his efforts because there will be more job opportunities for our community college and Manoa graduates," said Takeyama, whose 40-year career has included law, service as a deputy state attorney general, educational administrative positions and public service.

"He is attempting to create a new industry in Hawai'i and is taking the monumental task of articulating this program throughout the entire UH system."

In addition to Takeyama's years as a regent, he was a special assistant to former UH President Robert Hiatt and was secretary of the Board of Regents for 10 years.

The Takeyamas' two children are both UH alumni, with son David earning a master's degree in urban planning and daughter Jan Sullivan a law degree.
