Kessell's one-hitter carries Kailua

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Kailua's Rusty-Ann Borges hits a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to drive in courtesy runner Olivia Rife with the game's only run.

The best young softball team in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association squeaked past another team of the future yesterday, as defending state champion Kailua stopped upstart Roosevelt, 1-0, at Stevenson Middle School field.

Kailua, the league's only unbeaten team despite having just two seniors, improved to 8-0 in the OIA Eastern Division. Roosevelt, a team with only one senior, fell to 6-2.

As usual, the powerhouse Surfriders rode the right arm of junior Courtney Kessell, who pitched a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts and one walk. She also hit a batter.

The only hit managed by the Rough Riders was a two-out, first-inning single by Meghann Pasion.

Roosevelt starter Genoa Aiko held her own in the duel, scattering eight hits. The game's lone run came in the fourth, when Kessell led off with a double to left-center field. Courtesy runner Olivia Rife then advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Rusty-Ann Borges' sacrifice fly to left.

"Roosevelt's a good team, their pitcher is really good," Kessell said.

Kessell, however, was in her usual groove from the start and the Rough Riders failed to advance any of their three base runners into scoring position. She struck out the side in the first, then retired the side in order in the second.

Kessell hit leadoff batter Noelle Kawelo in the third, but Kailua turned a double play on the next at-bat and Kessell got a strikeout to end the inning.

She allowed a two-out walk to Chevelle Kauahipaula in the fifth, but again got a strikeout to end the inning and then set down the final six batters of the game in order — five on strikeouts.

"(Roosevelt) is a good ball club, but Courtney was up to the task," Surfriders coach Bernard Victor said. "She had them off-balanced."

Kailua's previous closest victory this season was a 3-0 win over Kaiser. But Kessell, the reigning Advertiser State Player of the Year, stayed loose throughout yesterday's game despite having only a 1-0 cushion.

On her way out to the pitching circle to begin the fifth inning, she stopped after spotting her mother, Lisa Buen, sitting a few yards behind the backstop.

"Hi, Mom!" she yelled, waving her right hand.

"I knew it was only 1-0, but I was comfortable," Kessell said after the game. "We were having fun out there."

Rough Riders coach Clay Okamura said it's no fun trying to score runs on Kessell.

"She's tough," Okamura said. "She keeps her composure. She enjoys the game, but you can tell she works real hard."

Hard work has made Roosevelt a contender despite a lack of experience. The Rough Riders' only senior, Justina Yanuaria, was sick yesterday and did not play. So their lineup consisted of five juniors, three sophomores and a freshman.

Okamura said his program "took our lumps" trying to develop the young players, but hopes to contend in the upcoming OIA playoffs after losing to Pearl City in the first round last year.

"They're young and inexperienced, but I think because of that they came in today without fear, thinking they have nothing to lose," Okamura said. "They did real well."
