Mafua to coach Kaimuki football

Advertiser Staff

Daniel Mafua, a former three-sport all-star at Kaimuki High School, has been named head football at his alma mater, Bulldogs athletic director Fred Lee announced yesterday.

Mafua, a 1987 Kaimuki graduate, spent the past three seasons as a varsity assistant, coaching the defensive backs and receivers. In high school, he was an OIA Eastern Division all-star defensive back, an all-star forward in basketball and the state 110-meter high hurdle champion.

Mafua was inducted into the Nissan Hall of Honor in 1987, the first Kaimuki athlete to be enshrined. He then played football for two years at Santa Rosa (Community) College.

Mafua replaces Ronald Oyama, who stepped down after five seasons to take graduate courses.
