Hawai'i to host Pacific Rim event

Advertiser Staff

An international gymnastic meet involving at least six Pacific Rim countries will be staged in Hawai'i in April, University of Hawai'i athletic director Herman Frazier announced last night.

Frazier, who doubles as a vice president of the U.S. Olympic Committee, made the announcement during a cocktail party honoring Pacific Rim sports officials at UH president Evan Dobelle's home.

Frazier said national gymnastic teams from China, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the United States will compete in the event at UH's Stan Sheriff Center.

Frazier said the meet will be held this year, in 2006 and, possibly, in 2008.

"We believe it's the last major event that will be held before the Olympic Games in Athens," Frazier said.

Frazier said plans call for maintaining an international softball tournament here and adding other events, such as swimming and track.
