Diesel spill closes freeway

A diesel-fuel spill today closed a section of the H-1 Freeway’s eastbound lanes between the Makakilo on-ramp and Grace Pacific Corp. basalt quarry at about 11:30 a.m.

Fire department spokesman Capt. Emmit Kane said about 100 gallons of fuel spilled onto the roadway from a flatbed truck’s ruptured fuel tank. Police closed all but one lane to motorists due to cleanup work, which was expected to last past noon, said Kane.

Man arrested in gambling raid

Police said they seized an undisclosed amount of money, gambling records and arrested a 57-year-old man on suspicion of running a sports betting "house," in a raid Wednesday on an apartment in Mo'ili'ili.

The man, described by HPD narcotics/vice Capt. Kevin Lima as a "mid-level player," was booked on first-degree possession of gambling records, a felony offense, and 12 misdemeanor counts of second-degree promotion of gambling. He was later released pending possible indictment at a later date.

Lima said police seized a "significant" amount of money from the 9 p.m. raid on a 10th-floor unit at the Marco Polo, 2333 Kapi'olani Blvd.

The sports betting activity, allegedly involving "6-5" betting, stems from an undercover operation. "Ideally, we want to dismantle the (gambling) house but it certainly does disrupt his operation," Lima said.

Traffic stop leads to charges

A 36-year-old Kailua man was charged yesterday with three firearm offenses, including being a felon in possession, and with driving an unreported stolen car.

Troy D. Carvalho of an Alala Road address is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Police said officers stopped Carvalho on a traffic violation Wednesday morning at Kaimalino Place and Launa Aloha Place at 3:33 a.m. and reported seeing a .22-caliber pistol on the passenger seat. Police later learned the car he was driving was stolen.

Lane reopens on Kalaheo

A single lane of Kalaheo Avenue is scheduled to reopen today, allowing traffic through Kailua in the Lanikai-to-'Aikahi direction during non-construction hours in the morning and evenings.

The road is closed to through traffic from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday for reconstruction and replacement of sewer lines. One lane of traffic had been open during non-construction hours until two weeks ago when a sewer break forced the contractor to close the road to make repairs.
