Pa'IA, Maui — The laid-back seaside town of Pa'ia was the scene of a fatal police shooting this afternoon.

Witnesses said that gunfire erupted at about 4 p.m. when a police officer fired more than one shot at an unidentified woman who was driving eratically on Baldwin Avenue in the heart of the former plantation town. The woman's car had collided with at least one other vehicle before she was shot through the windshield.

The woman's body remained in the white sedan, which police covered with a cloth to shield from onlookers.

Police blocked off a portion of Baldwin Avenue, causing a major rush-hour traffic jam on Hana Highway.

A small group of people who had gathered by the yellow police tape were seen praying.

Pa'ia is a former sugar workers' town given over to funky boutiques, restaurants and art galleries, as well as several longtime business. It is popular with an eclectic mix of people, including neo-hippies, surfers and windsurfers and tourists.
