THE LEFT LANE
Memoirs for two

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Director Martin Scorsese and actor Robert De Niro are about to collaborate again. Not around the movie camera this time, but in front of the keyboard, as they co-write a joint memoir of their mutual film exploits.

The untitled book will be published by Harmony Books, a division of Random House, in fall 2005 and will recount anecdotes from the making of the eight films the two have worked on together since 1973: "Mean Streets," "Taxi Driver," "New York, New York," "Raging Bull," "The King of Comedy," "Goodfellas," "Cape Fear" (above) and "Casino."

Although both men grew up in the same New York neighborhood, they didn't meet until 1970 and began working together shortly thereafter.

Shortbread says love

Valentine's Day is all about hearts and flowers, right? Well, for the "heart" part of your expression of love this year, you might consider Big Island Candies' chocolate-dipped shortbread in a new dress.

You can get three heart-shaped chocolate dipped cookies, with half of the heart coated with chocolate (instead of the rectangular cookie with the slanted choco-dip), as part of a Cupids box, that also includes dark chocolate dipped shortbread and four chocolate covered mints. Cost: $13.50.

To ensure delivery by Feb. 14, order by Feb. 5; check out other Valentine's goodies at www.bigislandcandies.com or (800) 935-5510.

Shabby chic shop

A tiny, funky shop, Le Chateau, just opened in Manoa. It's all about shabby chic.

Merchandise includes vintage looks in home furnishings, quilts and baby things. Owner Kami Lizares makes frilly, feminine baby clothes from pieced fabrics. Designer Dana Wheat of "Two Hula Girls & a Surfer" turns vintage handkerchiefs into one-of-a-kind baby dresses, jackets and pants.

Le Chateau is at 2740 E. Manoa Road, next to Boston's North End Pizza in the old Shell Service station. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
