The road is closed to through traffic from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday for reconstruction and replacement of sewer lines. One lane of traffic had been open during non-construction hours until two weeks ago when a sewer break forced the contractor to close the road to make repairs.
HONOLULU
Anti-drug rally postponed
Organizers have postponed the People's Summit & Rally against Ice and Addiction that was to take place at 11:30 a.m. today at the State Capitol courtyard, because of forecasts of rain, thunderstorms and possible flooding.
Safety concerns, especially for the three busloads of children who had been expected today, played into the decision, said M.P. "Andy" Anderson, chief executive officer for Hina Mauka Recovery Center.
Another rally will be planned, he said.
30 crews ready for Ala Wai race
The 19th annual Ala Wai Challenge canoe race will be held as usual this year after nearly 30 crews signed up to take part in the benefit for the nonprofit Waikiki Community Center.
The event, which starts at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at Ala Wai Community Park, will include canoe races, live entertainment, food booths and makahiki games.
Jeff Apaka, spokesman for the center, said the event had been in jeopardy, but enough crews came forward to continue. Last year, 40 teams helped raise nearly $20,000 to support the childcare and early-education program, emergency food pantry, elderly healthcare services, and learning with English as a second language.
The event will honor master canoe paddler Michael A. Tongg.
Late entries are still being accepted. Call Apaka at 923-1802.
