Iolani clobbers Punahou

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Iolani's Derrick Low soars past Punahou's Jeremiah Ostrowski for a layup in last night's ILH game at Iolani's gym.

Eugene Tanner • The Honolulu Advertiser

The gap between Hawai'i's No. 1-ranked high school boys basketball team and No. 2 was 34 points last night.

The gap between Iolani's and any other local hoops dynasty is looking more and more like a span of 23 years.

Punahou won three straight state championships from 1979-81 and nobody has done it since. But two-time defending state champ Iolani, with a resounding 72-38 blowout of the visiting Buffanblu last night, showed that fans may have to look back a generation to find a comparable challenger.

The Raiders, unanimously ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll for the past three seasons, improved to 6-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu with their 60th consecutive win over a Hawai'i opponent.

Punahou, ranked No. 2, fell to 5-1.

The Buffanblu looked up to the challenge early on, jumping out to a 5-2 lead and energizing a capacity crowd of about 1,150 (about 600 more watched on a live closed-circuit big screen in the adjoining Father Bray Gym).

But on its first of several explosive runs, Iolani got seven straight points from Derrick Low and went on an 11-2 spurt, finishing the first period with a 13-10 lead. Punahou kept it as close as 26-20 late in the second quarter, but the Raiders ended the half with an 8-2 run to take a 34-22 lead into the locker rooms.

Iolani then burst out of the second half gates with a 12-0 run to lead 46-24, and the rout was on.

Low finished with a game-high 19 points, all in the first three periods. Teammate Ryan Hirata added 14 points, including four 3-pointers from NBA range and beyond.

"We knew we had to bring our 'A game,' and we rose to the occasion," said Low, a 6-foot-1 point guard who added three steals. "Playing Punahou helps, because it's a big rivalry and we had a huge crowd watching us."

The huge crowd was treated to not only the usual offensive fireworks by Low and Hiarata, but also a show of relentless defensive pressure by all 12 Raiders who took the floor.

"I couldn't ask for more, especially when it came to the defensive effort," Iolani coach Mark "Doc" Mugiishi said. "That's the beauty of this team — they really hustle and get after it, and the guys take more pride in their defense than scoring points. That's a big key to our success."
