Crowell belts grand slam to lead UH softball to win

April Crowell's grand slam in the bottom of the third inning was all the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine softball team needed yesterday in a 4-2 exhibition win over the alumnae at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Melissa Coogan struck out six in four innings to earn the win, while Jessica Morton picked up the save.
The Rainbow Wahine open the season Feb. 4 against Brigham Young on the first day of the Hawai'i Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
BASEBALL
Hilo, SDSU split: San Diego State and the University of Hawai'i-Hilo traded games in a non-conference doubleheader yesterday at Wong Stadium in Hilo. Scott Shoemaker went six innings, gave up three runs on four hits and struck out eight for SDSU as it won 6-3 in the opening game.
Johnny Dudoit went 4 for 5 including a home run with five RBIs and scored three runs in leading the Vulcans to a 15-13 victory in the second contest.
San Diego State is 1-1, while the Vulcans are 3-6.
The two teams will play today at Simmons Field in Kailua, Kona at 11 a.m.
WATER POLO Rainbow Wahine beat alumnae: Makana Whitford netted four goals to lead the University of Hawai'i women's water polo team over the alumnae, 11-7, yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Amber Lumb stopped 11 of the alumnae's shots and Kristy Bagnall added two goals and two assists.
The Rainbows open their season at Pacific on Feb. 5. Their first home game will be against UC Irvine on Feb. 14 at 6 p.m.
MEETING
Quarterback Club: University of Hawai'i women's basketball coach Vince Goo will be one of three speakers at tomorrow's Quarterback Club luncheon. Hawai'i Pacific University basketball coach Russell Dung and Star-Bulletin sportswriter Dave Reardon will also speak.
The club's luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at Pagoda Ballroom.

12 UH athletes honored by WAC: The WAC announced All-Academic honors Friday for 2003 fall sports, and 12 University of Hawai'i athletes made the list. A total of 186 student-athletes were named to the list. To be eligible, athletes must have had at least a 3.2 GPA and participated in at least 50 percent of their respective sport's games.
