Straub program seeks students

Straub Foundation is seeking applications for an eight-week 2004 Summer Student Research Program from June 21 to Aug. 13.

Since 1986, the program has offered an introduction to clinical research and hands-on experience to eight to 10 college undergraduates interested in a career in medicine.

Each student becomes a member of a research team, receiving guidance from a principal investigator. For applications, call the Straub Foundation at 524-6755. Application deadline is Feb. 27.


Learn about labor epidurals

Expectant parents are invited to attend a free one-hour session on labor epidurals, a local anesthetic given during childbirth, at the Kaiser Honolulu Clinic.

Non-Kaiser members also may attend one of the sessions at two Kaiser Permanente offices at 7 p.m.: Feb. 9 at the Kaiser Honolulu Clinic, 1010 Pensacola St., second-floor conference room 2E, and Feb. 17 at Kaiser Moanalua Medical Center, 3288 Moanalua Road, second-floor auditorium.

Cervical cancer talk at Queen's

"Closing in on Cervical Cancer" is the topic of a free talk in The Queen's Medical Center's "Speaking of Health" community lecture series this month featuring clinical experts affiliated with Queen's.

Cervical cancer ranks 11th among cancers diagnosed in Hawai'i women. Each year, about 61 women statewide are diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer, and another 12 women die from it.

The disease is most likely to be detected and prevented through early screening. The experts will talk about early detection, advances in treatment and radiation therapy.

Gynecologic oncologist Dr. Keith Terada and radiation oncology specialist Dr. Thanh Huynh will speak at 6 p.m. Wednesday at The Queen's Conference Center at the corner of Beretania and Punchbowl streets.

Reservations are required at 537-7117. Parking is available for $3 in the Miller Street parking garage.


Hepatitis C part of presentation

A free presentation on hepatitis C and substance abusers will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday for healthcare professionals, counselors, nurses, outreach workers, caregivers, patients and their families.

The event, sponsored by Drug Addiction Services of Hawai'i Inc. and the Hepatitis Prevention, Education, Treatment and Support Network of Hawai'i, includes cultural entertainment by Danny Lopes Sr., composer of "A Part of Me, A Part of You," and refreshments.
